How long should you BBQ chicken? It would be easy to make a habit of bringing the chicken back from the grill as a treat for your friends. It would also be easy to get into the meat of things and start making delicious and healthy chicken recipes at home. But is it healthy? You need to take a closer look at this question.
How long to BBQ chicken? I don’t know about you, but once I get started cooking out, I want my dinner to be done. So I usually end up grilling until the food is completely done. Now this might be fine if you just want to cook some chicken legs or something along those lines, but if you are going to start cooking with good, healthy sauces then you will want to keep that number high. How long to BBQ chicken is about cooking the chicken right through to the time when the sauce is ready. If you cook it longer than that, you run the risk of burning the bird, or, worse yet, giving it bad bacteria and then possibly making it a lot worse.
What is the best time to buy chicken? For me, it’s about two hours before you’re planning on finishing up your meal. Ideally, you should let it cook long enough to remove all the juices from the bird, and, at the same time, have the sauce prepared. How long to BBQ chicken depends entirely on your personal preference? Most people I know like to cook it longer, but if you are one who prefer your foods to be crispy and flavorful I suggest you keep it low and close to the bone.
So how long to BBQ a chicken breast depends on whether you are using a traditional Texas style sideboard or a gas or charcoal BBQ grill. If you have either of these tools you are looking at approximately two hours for a good solid BBQ flavor. If, however, you have a stove top barbecue grill you are looking at closer to four hours. I prefer the indirect medium heat method of cooking in which the meat cooks from the outside in. It’s done quicker than the direct medium heat method of cooking from the inside out, but the end result is still good and tasty.
In order to make the sauce for the BBQ chicken lollipop you will need a jar of flour, a stick of margarine, three sticks of onions, some salt and pepper to taste, about three cups of barbecue sauce (you can use whatever you like), some dried thyme, a few bay leaves and about two to three tablespoons of flour. Let’s get started. First, if you haven’t already done so, you will want to get your chicken lollipop out of the refrigerator and unwrap it. If you have already put the chicken lollipop in the refrigerator, you can just cut it in half and allow it to warm up to room temperature.
Now, in order to make the sauce for your bbq chicken drumsticks start by combining the flour, salt and pepper in a sauce pan and bring to a gentle boil. After about five minutes turn off the heat and allow to cool. In your electric or microwave oven you will need to cook the onions and garlic for about three minutes on each side while browning them in the oven. Once they are soft, remove them from the oven and allow to cool.
The next step is to cut the chicken breast into thin slices. You will want to be sure to keep the larger pieces warm while you prepare the rest of the meal. To cook the drumstick in this fashion, you will want to preheat the grill to medium high heat, but not high enough to sear the skin of the chicken. Place the drumstick onto the hot grill and let it cook thoroughly, turning it side to side as it cooks. When the drumstick is done, remove it from the grill and place it on a cutting board but be sure to leave an inch or two of space at the top for the juices to pool.
Place the chicken breasts on a cutting board and using a rub made with dry mustard, cumin, paprika, black pepper, and salt, rub the outermost skin of the drumstick. Cover the cavity with aluminum foil to keep the juices from evaporating. Remove the drumstick from the aluminum foil and place it on a baking sheet, preheated to 400 degrees. While the drumstick is baking, you can continue to rub the remaining sauce mixture onto it but only during the initial stage of cooking. Remove the chicken from the baking sheet and place it on a hot grill for two or three minutes or until the juices begin to evaporate.
